Outdoor Life, Canoeing and Kayaking

Out on the water and into the wild.

In Outdoor Life, Canoeing and Kayaking at Vestjyllands Højskole, we head out into the landscapes of West Jutland. We explore Ringkøbing Fjord and local lakes and rivers by canoe and kayak, climb trees and gather around the campfire. There is room for adventure, laughter and quiet moments as we discover how little we really need to feel happy and at home outdoors with others.

On the water, we learn basic paddling techniques and practise reading the wind, weather and water. We challenge our balance, meet the waves and experience the forces of nature first-hand. Along the way, we build skills, confidence and respect for the water. You do not need any previous canoeing or kayaking experience – we start with the basics and focus on safety, helping you feel comfortable on the water with others.

On land, we explore simple outdoor living and practical crafts. We learn to use basic tools, carve wood and make useful things from natural materials. We practise lighting fires, keeping warm and cooking over a campfire. And when we climb trees, we gain fresh perspectives on both nature and our own courage.

We may also pack our bags for a night outdoors. Together, we will work out what we need when an evening around the campfire becomes a whole night under the stars or in an open-sided wooden shelter. Food, water, warmth, shelter and good company soon matter more than everything we have left at home.

This subject Outdoor Life, Canoeing and Kayaking at Vestjyllands Højskole is about developing practical confidence and finding solutions together. About gliding silently through the water, getting a fire going and preparing a meal to share. We discuss our responsibilities when spending time in nature and learn to care for one another and the places we visit.

You will gain the skills and confidence to head out on your own adventures after your stay – and discover the joy of slowing down, working with your hands and spending time outdoors, both on your own and with others.
