In Dance & Choreography at Vestjyllands Højskole, we work with contemporary dance. You’ll use your body creatively, challenge yourself, and create together with others. Here, dance is not about being perfect — it’s about energy, presence, courage, community, and being 100% yourself.
Maybe you’ve danced your whole life. Maybe you’ve never stepped into a dance studio before. Both are equally welcome here. The most important thing is that you want to move, experiment, and discover what happens when music, movement, and creativity come together.
We work from the body you already have. No one is expected to fit into one specific way of dancing. Quite the opposite. We explore movement, create choreography, develop our own artistic expression, and find strength in our differences. We refine material together, but you’ll also have space to develop your own solos.
And yes — we’ll laugh loudly, get out of breath, listen to both amazing and terrible music, film dance projects, perform, and experience that very special feeling of being completely present in your body — alone and together.
What do we do in Dance & Choreography?
We work technically, creatively, physically, and artistically with dance and choreography. Among other things, you will:
work in groups, duets, and solo formats
improvise and explore movement to create your own choreography
dive into partnering, where we lift each other and create dynamic formations
become confident in floorwork and acrobatic flow
dance to good, weird, and unexpected music
film dance projects and work creatively with video
use the school surroundings and nature as a stage
experiment with performance and stage presence
get inspired by choreographers from around the world
learn more about your own movement patterns and physical expression
laugh, sweat, and challenge yourself technically, physically, and creatively

For both beginners and experienced dancers
You don’t need any dance experience to join. Maybe you simply love moving to music in your room, at concerts, or on the dance floor. Maybe you’ve danced for years and want to explore dance in a new and more creative way.
In Dance & Choreography at Vestjyllands Højskole, we meet across different levels of experience, and that creates a strong sense of community. It’s not about fitting into one specific style or technique — it’s about finding your own expression and becoming more confident in it, both individually and together with others.
Create choreography and perform together
Through creative exercises and choreographic tasks, we create both small and large dance projects together. Sometimes we work quickly and intuitively. Other times we dive deep into details, moods, storytelling, and movement quality.
Along the way, you’ll have opportunities to share your work — both with the rest of the school and at public events. It can feel intense, vulnerable, exciting, and incredibly rewarding to see something you created come alive in front of an audience.
We dance beyond the studio
Dance doesn’t only happen inside the dance studio. We also work with video, locations, and the spaces around us. Maybe you’ll end up filming choreography in nature, in the school hallways, or in the middle of Velling.
We experience dance art up close by watching performances and getting inspired by professional dancers and choreographers from Denmark and around the world. We visit places such as dance companies and institutions in Holstebro or Bora Bora in Aarhus, where we experience contemporary dance, performance, and stage art firsthand. We also often host dance artists in residence at the school, giving you the opportunity to meet different artistic approaches to dance and performance.
More than just dance
Dance & Choreography is also a subject where you learn something about yourself. About courage. Presence. Collaboration. And what happens when you dare to fill a room with your own energy.
