Visible mending

A hole in your clothes is not the end of the story – it is the beginning of a new chapter.

Have the knees of your favourite jeans worn thin? Has your best shirt developed a hole in the elbow? Don’t despair. In Visible Mending at Vestjyllands Højskole, we learn how to give textiles a new life through creative and visible repairs, where wear and tear are not hidden away but become part of the story.

We dive into the art of repair and explore how needle, thread, and fabric scraps can transform holes, worn areas, and damage into something beautiful, personal, and durable. This course is not about making clothes look new again – it is about making them even more your own.

In Visible mending, you will learn a variety of techniques, including darning, patching, sashiko-inspired stitching, embroidery, and other creative forms of textile repair. Through working with colours, patterns, textures, and materials, we experiment with how repair can become a personal expression and a craft in its own right.

Visible mending is also a way of thinking about sustainability. We explore how to take better care of the resources we already have and how slowness, care, and craftsmanship can offer an alternative to today’s throwaway culture.

Bring your worn-out favourite clothes to folk high school and experience the satisfaction of giving them a new life. You may find that the repaired piece becomes the garment you treasure most.
