Percussion

We dive into the vibrant world of African drumming, focusing primarily on the djembe and bass drums such as dunun, sangban, and kenkeni.

Through practical exercises, we explore the rich, layered sounds of West African rhythms and build a solid foundation in technique, hand patterns, and the art of producing clear, resonant tones.

The course emphasizes both the development of personal skills and the importance of listening, precision, and consistency within a drumming ensemble.

As we progress, we learn to interact rhythmically as a group and gain insight into call-and-response structures, as well as how each drum voice contributes to a cohesive, dynamic sound.

By practicing traditional rhythms, we develop a deeper understanding of timing, tempo, and musical expression. Finally, we experience the energy of performing in a drum circle, using rhythmic coordination and teamwork to bring these captivating patterns to life.
