Dancing is joy and creativity. Dancing is a game of life and music. Hard work and sweat gets together with excess of energy. Dancing is social togetherness.
You can either dance a couple of hours or fill your entire week up so to create your own dancing folk high school.

We offer lessons in contemporary dance, World dance, hip hop, Tango and Ballet. Our lessons are aimed at both beginners, who are seeking a fun and inspiring dancing course, and those who consider an education in professional dance.
We combine both traditional styles with modern dance so you get the best from both worlds. In all of the classes, we work towards performing a choreographed show.
World dance concentrates itself on traditional dancing from Africa, Cuba and Brazil. It iss about technic, hard work and having fun. The dancing styles we primarily use are West afro, salsa, reggae ton, reggae, afro-Cuban, samba-reggae, samba and axé. We focus on the individual dances and through the technical use of the body you will understand the physical experience of the different dancing styles. By doing this you will be more, aware of the individual dancing characteristics compared to other dancing styles.

We work with the dances both in their original ritual manifestations as well as in choreographed dancing styles that are better suited for performance. We mix the dancing styles into a dancing mix spiced with funk and reggae, and pump it off to groovy music.

Modern dance is a collected term for a series of aesthetic dancing expressions which are hard to describe, but easy to distinguish. Modern dance appeared as an art form for about 100 years ago, and began with a series of dancers rebelling against societies and especially ballets tight interpretation of dancing. In modern dance it is the natural movement of the body, the force of gravity and the personal expression that are in focus. Contemporary dance is the term for the dancing style that is evolved from modern dance. The areas we mainly focus on in the contemporary dancing lessons are floor technique, improvisation and physical training. We work with jumping, pirouettes, partnering and contact improvisation. We also do a bit of physical training, so the body is ready for the techniques.

Ballet is a course in controlling your body. A useful tool when you have to dance all other kinds of dances. Ballet is the mathematics of all dances. When you work with ballet, the ‘numbers’ start to add up. By working with the technicalities of ballet you will understand the connection between body and mind better, when you work with other dancing styles. Contemporary dance uses many of the same dancing elements and in street dance some of the techniques are directly taken from ballet. In the lessons we work towards being very aware of the body. This means you’ll learn to understand which muscles you use and become more precise in your movements. The ballet lessons also provide more flexibility to your body and the possibility for developing faster foot work. Since we work with much awareness of the body, you can also train the certain strengths you want to work with, so you among other things can learn to jump higher. You will also learn how to dance train intensively with getting injuries.

Hip hop is the dance of the streets. It is a dancing style intended to use for showing off to your homies, and therefore requires preparation and timing in order to get the new tricks in place. Street dance consists of tight choreographies, counting and a high pulse. It is physically enduring and the steps and tricks have to be precise. We include elements from breakdancing, house, locking, boogie, reggae, crip walking, waves, popping, LA-style from the streets and we create a coherent flow.

Tango consists of teasing and challenge. The expression is varied, but mainly it is about desire and intimacy, sensuality and controlled passion. The pair plays and improvises through the dance, which is neight random nor pre choreographed. Tango is a dance, which on one hand is danced through a certain system, while on the other is free and improvised. Tango originally was invented in Argentinia around Buenos Aires at the end of the previous century.
In the original tango the gentleman and the lady dance very close to each other. The pair communicates by certain signs which help the gentleman to lead the lady through fun and sinful step combinations. Woven into the woman and man’s natural attraction this adds together in an intense and elegant cocktail.

Dancing shows. Part of having dancing classes is preparing shows or performances. It is a natural part of the schools life in connection with open house arrangements, gourmet restaurant (arranged by the cookery students) and café evenings.

Music does something to us. Our music lessons is all about starting the creative process, to play with the possibilities within music and start on something new.
Ensemble or band makes for great part of the music classes together with songwriting. If you wish solo lessons in an instrument, talk with the music teacher, and we will arrange something for you. When we reproduce, we learn about sound, technical and theoretical skills, instruments, the music language, stiles, sound etc.
We can reproduce all kind of stiles from salsa to African highlife, rock, Brazilian funk, klezmer, jazz or something completely different. We will provide you with new tools for your musical arsenal, to improve your timing, your performance and your ability to play together with others. The process from idea to performing your song, is an enormous learning process and a huge experience for you and the rest of the band.

Songwriting is a great deal in the music lessons. We find your personal development as a musician very interesting. We will work with different themes and projects. Eg. rhythmical training, theory and sound training, recording in our own studio, planning of tour and tour with your own songs. And of course we are going to play live!
Music classes make up for 8 hours a week. You will also have the possibility to get electronic music as a separate class.

This class is about the joy of singing. We sing monophonic, polyphonic and solo. Singing consists of plenty of voice exercises, singing education, choir as well as the possibility of choosing solo singing (at an additional fee).

Whether the goal is a career within singing, improving your voice impact, learning the fundaments of the voice, jam it as the lead singer in a band or just to sing all day long – you have come to the right folk high school!

Both you and your voice will come around the wide spectrum of the vocal chords, and we will put you, your voice and your development in motion. You will learn general singing techniques and about the voices different tones, possibilities and expression. “Singing workshop” is a fixed part of the classes, where we in turn sing for each other and learn simple techniques that make it more comfortable to sing. It is a training that can be used not only for singing but also in many other contexts where you have to perform in front of others with your voice.

As with all other instruments, the voice has to be taken well care of. You voice is a part of your body, and by doing some physical and supportive exercises you will make it easier for yourself (and for others).

You will learn how to insert your own choir chorus, as well as microphone technique. Singer i 6 lessons a week.

In solo singing, we focus on evolving your personal expression and finding your own voice. It is your wishes and needs that decide how the course will go. There can be several areas of focus when working with singing. It can be a supporting voice, rhythmic, phrasing, improvisation, lyric interpretation and tone.

There is an additional fee of DKK 1000 a month if you wish to enlist on solo singing.

Choir. It is amazing to be able to express yourself with your voice in a context, where it all adds up collaboration with others. Maybe you do not think that your own voice sounds of much in its own, but when singing with others it may suddenly give off a strong cling. This is why it can be nice to sing together in a choir. Once a week we have common singing, where we feel the rush of many voices becoming one. There is also the possibility of having choir once a week. Guest teacher Lydiah Wirimu teaches choir classes.

Do you like to form experience and express yourself sculpturally? Then “ceramics” is your subject. The history of ceramics are going back to beginning of civilization and today the ceramic world is huge, full of variation and constantly under development. The material has several ways to be used and is exceptional for creating the expression you wish – simple, clean, functional design to concept design and art decorations. In the ceramic class, you will learn to understand the possibilities of the clay and you are the only one making limits!

You will be presented with different types of clay and be shown the different ways of using it. Furthermore, we will work with pinching, coiling, cast, form, glazing, burnishing and much more.

No matter your individual starting level you will be challenged, but most of all we will inspire each other and have a great time in the workshop. The subject has six lessons a week, but the workshop is open around the clock.

In painting class, we paint. We paint with acrylics, oil paint, oil sticks, oil pastels and ink, and recently also with airbrush – angle grinder and paint on wooden boards – drawings on clay – and linocut and monotype. The sea and the garden, newspapers, movies, music, comics, iron foundries and scrapyards all form can form the inspiration for creating picture. Like this we meet the picture where we least expect it. The lectures consist of a mix between concrete knowledge about materials and techniques, but also running inspections of our own and other’s work. This also provides good tools for studying contemporary art. There will be possibility of museums visits and collection of material for generating a motive in the west Jutlandic nature. A valued practice in the subject is the quick sketch and we like to focus on the travelling sketch, which is a quick notation with pastel during travels. The subject consists of four weekly hours, with the possibility to add 2 more extra hours.

Theatre is a space for opportunity! We relate to both the great emotions and the small ups and downs of everyday life.

We discover the great words of the classical monologue and try out the art of creating a dialogue between two actors that’s captivating and filled with drama. Both experienced theater people and new to the subject are welcome.

Theater show. We work towards producing a theater show. Along the way, we train and prepare exercises so you will be ready to bring your character to life on the stage. There will be much practical work, and you will work on bringing your body the expression that is suited for your role on stage.

We will work closely with the body as an element on the scene, and we will train the body’s possibilities and nuances. Is a shrug on the head a rejection, recognition or perhaps the start of a flirtation? You have to be an authentic part of the World the audience perceives on stage, so work with the scenic expression is an important part of the theater subject.

We will work with improvisations and with variants of known texts. In the work towards the production of the show, we will ask ourselves the question: How do we make the written text in the manuscript into a living expression that the audience can live into? We will try out the mimics with few instruments and work with all that is said between the lines.

we will experiment with the creation of our own texts. We start with practicing improvisation that ends up in a written form, and then we will try writing a text, that is then prepared and acted out on stage. In short, we will try a varied range of directions and traditions within the theater niche.

In Entrepreneurship we are looking into the upstart of new business and projects with a sustainable element. The class will combine theory and practical work, so you take your thoughts to action. We are looking into the political and ecological systems that builds up our every day and what role we have in creating and sustaining them. We will look at our way of using the resources of the nature such as water, food and energy, but we will also look into how we are as humans. We are the “raw material” of the sustainable society. We will play with tools, which show the way towards the sustainable society. This covers for example cradle to cradle, nudge social innovation and U-theory.

We will visit companies that work with sustainability and learn from their experiences. To make a sustainable society, we need to create something new. We are innovative at Vestjyllands Højskole and want to lead the development of sustainable change.

Through yours and your fellow classmates’ interests, ideas and abilities sustainable project will be formed. Former students have for instance been working with aquaponics, permaculture, biodiversity, building and sustainable consumption. The project can be presented for the school, the local society and maybe the politicians at the end of course. We will show the World, that it is possible to do changes. The subject is six lessons per week.

Permaculture is a system of agricultural and social design principles centered around simulating or directly utilizing the patterns and features observed in natural ecosystems. It is both a way of gardening, building and organizing life and society in a sustainable way.

At Vestjyllands Folk High school, we concern ourselves with finding new paths towards creating a sustainable society and testing out the ideas in practice. Sustainability is a creative challenge for us as human beings. Whether you hide an inner artist, designer, engineer, smith, leader or eco-farmer, your practice can be sustainable. We would like to help get you started.

Garden work. Permaculture is not all about the gardening, but it is still at part of the class. If you want even more gardening you can choose it as a class on its own.

As in everything, we do, permaculture and sustainability is also a big part of our class in entrepreneurship.

Cooking class. The first sight of a meal should evoke joy: as when the sun sets on dear memories. The newest meal we prepare should offer fresh experiences - reminisce of what has already been done before. This is what cooking class is about!

The raw ingredients we use vary according to the season, but they are also influenced by different culture’s traditions and tendencies that have been evolved and refined throughout centuries. We concentrate both on the nutritional value of a meal during classes, but also on the cultural historical aspect. Cooking is brewed on myths and fantasy, and the sharing of resources and global politics. In cooking class you will get the opportunity to play and experiment with foreign and known ingredients unique taste?

Our senses have to be challenged and the finesses of the culinary arts expanded! In cooking class we prepare once a week a splendid feast for our folk high school buddies. By this, we learn cooking from all of its stages: planning, buying the necessary groceries, preparing the food, and finally serving it to look delicious!

We take over the kitchen and experiment with recipes, raw ingredients and new connections. We seek inspiration from all over the World and put out a theme for each week, where we make a feast of a buffet for the fellow students.

Each of these weekly feasts are a grand highlight for all the students and is festive every time in a new way. You choose yourself what dish you want to prepare and you will get real culinary arts in practice. We talk about what tools to use for what, and end up juggling with knives, pans and pots.

We also learn the different parts and names of the meat we mainly use, and the tricks to find where the chops are in a sheep and how to make the best sausages from a pig. Food is just as much about culture as it is about raw ingredients.

Patisserie and baking class. Flour and water, the simplest elements on the cook’s palette. They can be formed into the fabulous gastronomic delights. The cake, the sweet, the petit fours. The skills involved can seem close to alchemy, but everyone can learn them. And dessert can be the glorious moment of a meal, one of the most remembered bites in a gastronomic dinner, the sweet memory that lingers on the tongue. To use the expression ‘breaking bread’ is to refer back to thousands of years of culture – and to have in mind the Platonic idea of the perfect loaf, the sight and sound and smell of a crust so perfectly baked that the thought already makes your mouth water. It is also the scent of gentle fermentation, that complex and slightly acidic taste, and a whole range of sumptuous textures.

Both breads and desserts involve a host of techniques, and behind both lie very complex sciences. This class will teach enough of those sciences to provide an understanding of the central techniques. The students will develop the skills to allow them to trust their sweet imagination and transform it into new creations.

Examples of subjects covered: ice creams and gelato, the complex science of chocolate, the many faces of an egg, savory desserts, croissants and other folded breads, yeast, sourdough, chemical leavening agents, cakes and mousses. We will also work together with the cooking class to create the desserts and bread for the Gourmet Restaurant Event. Finally, our sweet creations will be served up for the delight of your schoolmates.

In our devotion to create a sustainable World it is only natural to dive in to the nature that we deem ourselves the guardians of.

In outdoor we seek the moments of connectedness to nature. It can be sitting on a hill listening to the bugling deer during the rut, spending the night next to a beaver dam or preparing a fire cooked meal in the freezing darkness of the December forest.

Then there is the preparation. We want you to be able to sustain yourself in the nature. That is why we devote a lot of time to the art of bushcrafting. In other words it is simply the art of making fire, finding food and creating shelter.

When the shit hits the fan the ability to not only survive, but to enjoy the nature and the community we seek in it dwarf all other abilities that you might have. Bushcraft is the oldest art form known to man.

To reach the outskirts of civilization we take in to use what gear we have. We will practice kayaking, canoeing, sailing, mountain biking and walking.

Outdoor is not about being number one. It is not about sports. It is about empowering you as human and a friend. When you tried sleeping outside in subzero temperatures 8° C will seem like a kingly comfort. Even though outdoor is not a contest, you will have the opportunity to test your abilities on your own or in a small group on a voluntary field trip.
